Quote of the Day: On Prayer

“God gives you what you would have prayed for if you knew everything He knows.”

- Timothy Keller

Make Me a Follower

To be a follower of Christ is to be devoted.  To be someone who is passionate about the Kingdom of God.  To be someone who loves with every part of his or her heart.

To be a follower of Christ is to be a disciple.  To be constantly filling their cup, believing you are their strength.

So Lord, we ask to be replenished by your Spirit as we gather together in community.

We ask that you would meet with us in our solitude, that we might hear your gentle voice that calms our storms.

Lord, we ask you to make us your followers.

“Teach me to follow your decrees, O LORD; then I will keep them to the end.” (Ps 119:33)

“I have taken an oath and confirmed it, that I will follow your righteous laws.” (Ps 119:106)

We desire not to give into the other gods in our lives, but to be sold out to your way.  We want to exalt your holy name above everything else and be dedicated to your cause of redemption.

Make your love contagious in us, as we love our world.

Amen.

“All I Can Do Is Pray”

prayer

Have you ever responded to someone or a situation with the comment, “All I can do is pray…”?  I’ve said it many times before.  And to be honest, I think it’s one of the dumbest things I say.

Another blogger, Stephen Altrogge, inspired this whole thought for me.  He said, “When I say, ‘All I can do is pray’, what I’m really saying is…

  • All I can do is ask the omnipotent, almighty God, who holds the universe in His hands to work on my behalf.
  • All I can do is ask for grace from the God who gave up His son for me and adopted me into His family.
  • All I can do is stop trying to run the world and ask God to do something.
  • I can run most of my life on my own, but when it comes to this situation, all I can do is pray.
  • I’ve run out of things that I can do, and now I guess I’ll resort to asking God for his help.
  • For a while I had this situation under control, but now I’ve got to ask God to lend a hand.”

What a ridiculous statement, right?  All of a sudden, with this innocent saying, I am revealing my lack of trust in God, my doubt that He is who He said He is, and that I believe my way is superior to God’s way.

See my normal response is to do, do, do.

This person is in trouble? …How do I fix it?

Someone needs something? …How can I provide?

Maybe it’s time I start trusting in God.  Maybe God shouldn’t be my last resort.  And maybe I should trust that God actually is in control.

What about you? Have you ever said this phrase?  Do you think this reveals anything about you and your faith?

Haiti Response

haiti-tragedy

Quick post, because I can’t let this just slip by before falling asleep tonight:

Amazing/Gutwrenching photos of Haiti.

Trustworthy organization to give help through.

Local response here in Rochester – Parkminster (another church in Chili) is hosting a silent auction for an orphanage they support in Haiti that was completely destroyed this Sat night at 7pm. The friend I talked to said his father runs the orphanage and had to literally drive over dead bodies to get back home. Unreal. Details here: http://www.parkminster.com/

One of my college best friends singing a song in response to the situation.

Pat Robertson drives me completely crazy. All we can pray for is that Pat decides to retire soon.

Then I learned the actual history of Haiti here and here and on CNN.

This is what Pat should have said.

Donald Miller then put Pat’s comments into perspective for me and pointed towards a Christ-like response.

My prayers are with the people of that country.
