Simple Math: Manchester Orchestra

Manchester Orchestra is pretty great.  Check out this video below and let me know what you think.  Lyrics are below the video.

Hunter eyes
I’m lost and hardly noticed, slight goodbye
I want to rip your lips off in my mouth
And even in my greatest moment doubt
The line between deceit and right now

Simple math, it’s how our bodies even got here
Sinful math, the ebb and flow to multiply
What if I was wrong and no one cared to mention
What if it was true and all we thought was right was wrong?
Simple math, the truth cannot be fractioned
Either way…

I imply to mitigate the guilt, we could align
A perfectly constructed alibi
To hush the violent guilt that eats and never dies
In actual blame, they call me once the dark divide

Simple math, it’s why our bodies even lay here
Sinful math, the truth cannot be fashioned
What if you were crazy, would we have to listen then?

What if we’ve been trying to get to where we’ve always been?
What if I was wrong, and started trying to fix it?
What if you believed me? Everything is brilliant

Oh, oh, oh

What if I’ve been trying to get to where I’ve always been?
What if we’ve been trying to get to where we’ve always been?
Simple math, believe me, all is brilliant
What if we’ve been trying to kill the noise and silence?

What if I was wrong and you had never questioned it?
What if it was true, that all we thought was right, was wrong?
Simple math, the truth cannot be fractioned
I imply I’ve got to get it back then

Oh, oh, oh

Simple math.

What do you think? Do you get it?

Agree or disagree?

For Fans of: The Swell Season, Damien Rice, Lisa Hannigan, She & Him, Alison Krauss & Robert Plant

I love the honesty of the lyrics for Poison and Wine.  I love the sound even more.  Who isn’t a sucker for a killer male/female duet? No one.

Joy Williams is known in the Christian industry for her 11 Dove Nominations, but now seems to be steering more towards music that is accessible to people of all faith backgrounds with her new endeavors in her band The Civil Wars.  Here are the lyrics for Poison and Wine, their first single I’ve posted above:

You only know what i want I you to
I know everything you don’t want me to
your mouth is poison your mouth is wine
you think your dreams are the same as mine

I don’t love you but I always will
I don’t love you but I always will
I don’t love you but I always will
I always will

I wish you’d hold me when I turn my back
well the less I give the more I get back
your hands can heal, your hands can bruise
I don’t have a choice, but I’d still choose you

I don’t love you but I always will
I don’t love you but I always will
I don’t love you but I always will
I don’t love you but I always will

I don’t love you but I always will
I don’t love you but I always will
I don’t love you but I always will

I always will
I always will
I always will
I always will

Joy Williams has partnered with JP and has written a fantastic description of her new group, The Civil Wars:

Poison & Wine is a musical snapshot about the dichotomy of love – that while it can be the thing that destroys you, it can also be the very same thing that beckons and builds you. JP and I are both married have been for several years now – and we got to talking one day about what a tug and pull our individual relationships can be. The longer you know someone – and the longer you allow someone to know you – the more the light and shadows inside each person become more vivid. This song was our attempt at being as brutally honest about the dangerous and beautiful process of knowing and being known. (-Joy Williams, The Civil Wars)

One of my favorite lines in the song shows the awesome commitment to their spouses: Your hands can heal, your hands can bruise. I don’t have a choice, but I’d still choose you. The first part of the lyric shows the complexity of a human relationship.  With every interaction, we can make a positive influence in someone’s life or damage them with our words.  The second part of the lyric explores our uncommitted world.  This lyric is very important, and to me, says, “even if I had the choice to leave, with all of our hardships and differences, I still choose you, because I love you. I always will.”

Explosions in the Sky #Music Monday Week 12

explosions-in-the-sky

explosions-in-the-sky

Explosions in the Sky writes some of the best ambient music out there. There is nothing better for tuning out Milton in the cubicle next to yours, or to enjoy when trying to wind down at the end of a long day.

The band from Texas primarily uses three electric guitars and a drum kit to make all of their unique sounds, although they sometimes exchange a guitar for a bass.  The band probably received their biggest notoriety for writing the score for the movie Friday Night Lights, although their best work comes through in their album All of a Sudden I Miss Everyone.  Many of their songs eclipse the 10-minute mark as well, making a .99 cent deal seem all the better for us as cheap consumers of music.

If you are someone who enjoys quiet time in your day, be sure to pick up an Explosions in the Sky album soon (here is an iTunes link).  As a youth pastor, I play them nearly every week at the end of our discussion to let our young people have time to pray/connect with God/think about their life.

Check it:

(PS – Just listen to the videos, don’t watch them.)

Vampire Weekend Week 3 #Music Monday

Vampire Weekend

Vampire Weekend is the very essence of great indie music.  Their self titled album, Vampire Weekend, was a huge success with nearly 500,00 record sales and if there was one album I’d been looking forward to with the new year, it was their new record. With their second album released this week, Vampire Weekend is proving that they are not just a band that makes one good CD and then fall off the map.  Instead, their latest album, Contra, will likely debut at #1 on the charts and the New York City hipster band continues to gain momentum.  If you are not an indie elitist (don’t worry, I’m not either), the sound may take a bit to grow on you, but I feel like it is the perfect album to have on in the background while plowing through emails at work.  The unique sounds and creative melodies make for a relaxing and uplifting listen. I want to write so badly, “I guarantee you’ll like it”, so I think I will throw out that empty promise.

Plus, Christian Lander, creator of the sarcastic Stuff White People Like website, said in an interview with Salon.com that Vampire Weekend is “the whitest band” alive.  Perfect.

**Caution: Some of their lyrics are not appropriate for young people, but for the most part their lyrics are not discernable.  I’ve listened to their albums on repeat for a long time and I actually never realized there are a few swear words in their music until after I wrote this post recommending the band.  It’s a great listen, so don’t worry about reading their lyrics if swearing offends you and you won’t even hear it.  Or, just skip this weeks recommendation and rock out to CCM. Nothing wrong with that.

Online Worship Resources

worship_image

As a worship leader, just like any job, it is hard to sift through all the information out there.  This is a guide on worship resources, including worship blogs, fantastic articles, top worship songs, magazines, worship projection, finding new worship songs, and how to efficiently find chords for your favorite worship songs.

Worship Blogs Worth Subscribing To (And Other Helpful Readings)

This is by no means an exhaustive list of worship blogs and I am still looking to find those who are writing insightful thoughts as to how to be a worship leader in an ever-changing culture.

Bob Kauflin/Worship Matters – This is the best worship resource on the net that I have found.  Bob is also the author of the book Worship Matters, which is the best worship leader book I’ve ever read.  I advocate this Sovereign Grace Ministries leader to all of my worship leader friends.

Worship Together Blog – Worship Together is one of the main hubs for worship leaders online. Video tutorials, free sheet music for top worship songs, solid worship articles, and sheet music for purchase.

Ross Parsley’s BlogRoss Parsley is the leader of New Life Church, the mega-church in Colorado Springs that had the unfortunate incident with Ted Haggard.  Ross writes good thoughts on worship and as many of my friends who know him tell me he has a very humble heart despite his huge reach on American Christianity.  I’m a fan of Ross’.  He also started an entire school for training young worshipers and has helped develop Jared Anderson (Amazed, Rescue) and Glenn Packiam (I am Free).

Glenn Packiam’s Blog – As I said, Glenn is another talent to come out of New Life’s congregation.  He writes some good practical advice and good insights if you can sift past all of his ads for his books.

Worship Resources Int’l - A whole host of great information and advice on worship and effective leading on a global scale.

Worship.com – Blog on worship and other theological insights. Some great articles, but you have to dig since they post a lot of other things on God too.

All About Worship – Blog format on Worship – lots of videos, giveaways, and helpful thoughts on worship.

Biblical Worship – A focused blog on asking practical questions on worship that points us to the cross. Huge focus on the history of where worship has come from.  Who knew Southern Baptists could produce some great content? ;)

Reformed Worship – Reformed and old-school, but a few good nuggets of information on worship.

David Crowder – You should read everything from Crowder because he is the best worship leader alive (whatever that means). Ha! He is my favorite writer and thinker when it comes to worship and how his album actually sounds, although his blog is more goofy than helpful for worship.  You can see his books here which I’ve skimmed and found very insightful.

Christianity TodayHere is a list of a ton of well done articles from Christianity Today on worship. CT has some of the best writings on Christianity on the web!

John Piper – John Piper, one of the most popular Christian teachers on the planet, writes daily on all sorts of topics.  Here is a link to all of his sermons and articles on worship. Really solid stuff.

CCLI – The necessary evil in the industry (I suppose). They have expanded beyond just being a copyright and data collection group to having some resources for worship leaders, including videos of how/why top worship songs were written.

Worship Links – TONS of links. Lots of terrible ones, but a lot of helpful links to articles, Christian publications, publishers, dance, denominations, arts, and other worship resources.

LifeWay – Christian publishers who also have a worship blog that is decent. Mission statement: “helping put ‘the exaltation of God’ into the mouths of God’s people and sharing the thoughts of others as they write about worship.”

Calvin Institute of Christian Worship – A HUGE plethora of resources and articles to grow and learn from on Christian Worshipers (tools for preparing to worship, reflections on what we do as worshipers, and insight on how worship looks from the pew), Publications (practical resources for congregational leaders and scholarly works on the history, theology, and practice of worship worldwide), Leadership (materials for worship planning, pastoral and lay leadership, teaching worship in schools and seminaries, and nourishing congregational life), Arts (enhancing and disciplining creativity in liturgical expression, including dance and drama, language arts, music, technology and media arts, and visual arts), Worshiping Communities (snapshots, studies, and stories of worship renewal in congregations, campuses, and communities throughout North America and around the world), and Interdisciplinary Learning (essays and documents on how worship interacts with biblical and theological studies, philosophy and the humanities, and the social sciences to shape transformative Christian living).

Resurgence – I’m no advocate for Mark Driscoll, but this is a concise and accurate description of the Scriptural requirements of a Worship Pastor at his site that I found helpful.

Engage Worship – Worship resources geared towards a younger audience. Like.

Experiencing God – Slightly old-school, but has some good articles and advice on worship leading and tech information.  I appreciated their dedication to Women in Worship.  Cool to see a whole section dedicated to advice from women.

Reformed Worship – “Our site features more than 1,700 articles for planning and leading worship – including complete service plans, dramas, litanies, seasonal resources, and more. Browse by issue, subject, season, or search by keyword.” It’s a decent resource.

Worship House Media – Mini Movies, Cool backgrounds, iWorship (yuck). Cool looking site, not that great of content.  The best site for church videos is probably Sermon Spice.

Israel Hougton - Blog from a top worship leader (not all that helpful though IMHO).

Don Moen – Another blog from a top worship leader that is more helpful.

Gateway Worship – Top Worship group definitely worth following, but no blog (that I’m aware of).

Paul Baloche/Lead Worship – Some resources,  but not all that helpful from Baloche.

Building Worship – Not much here other than free worship backgrounds and a video countdown to start the service.

Resound Worship – “RESOUNDworship.org is an exciting free resource for churches worldwide. Our aim is to provide local churches with fresh worship songs containing strong, Biblical lyrics supported by singable, contemporary music.” Decent.

[If you have more that are helpful, please let me know in the comments below.]

Finding Chords for Worship

The beauty of the internet is that it has made a lot of things cheaper and in many cases free.  If you are looking for sheet music, your best option is to probably go through Praise Charts or Worship Together.  However, many people do not need the 4 part harmony or even the melody line.  They just need chords and .mp3′s.  Read More »

Portfolio of Artists from Sig Ent

guitar-player

Below is a list of artists I have worked with in some sorts, assisting them in their musical endeavors. Some of the bands I have helped form, some I’ve given advice as to where to invest their limited income, some I’ve helped with design work or connecting them to the people they need, while others I have simply provided feedback on how to make their sound better for their album (the sound engineer in me…). These are in no particular order, but thought I should give a much deserved shout-out to my friends and clients out there.

Tirzah Lemmens – Singer-songwriter with one of the most unbelievable voices I’ve ever heard. First artist signed to Signature Entertainment Group.
With Walking Trees – Electro-infused post-hardcore group I helped to assemble and do everything from A-Z with. Love these guys and their ridiculous music.
Chris Wilson – Amazing drummer who has worked with me and Sig. Ent. a lot.
Garrett Brown – former member of Manchester Orchestra and Elevate, I’ve given Garrett some feedback on his music. Really great alternative writer.
Jason Frey – Engineer of the studio I manage, but also a very talented Christian worship writer. Read More »
